Studio Display Mod - Blueprint of Protective Skin

Despite the revolution of LCD technology bring about production of HD monitors with 4K or even 5K resolutions, some people still concern not only the screen quality per se but also the overall design of a monitor (like me XD). This is one of the articles about modifying an obseleted Apple Studio Display 17" (ADC) to meet present use.

Studio Display Mod - Protective Film for the Display

Despite the revolution of LCD technology bring about production of HD monitors with 4K or even 5K resolutions, some people still concern not only the screen quality per se but also the overall design of a monitor (like me XD). This is one of the articles about modifying an obseleted Apple Studio Display 17" (ADC) to meet present use.

The Studio Display is heavy. It is about 45.8 lb (21 kg). The whole weight of the display is being sustaied by the stand. To make it worst, as the monitor is already a very old item, there will be some depreciation, degrading or weakening of the structure, including the stand. Therefore, whether it is still fit to hold the CRT is in doubt. In fact, my original Studio Display has been broken at the stand.

After the modification, the display will be much lighter, as the CRT will be removed. However, it is still a good idea to strengthen the structure of the stand to prevent it from damage and extend its lifespan.

Making a Protective Skin for the Stand

We have initiated a number of proposals, but finally, we found that applying Bestskinsever protective skin on the stand of the Studio Display appears to be the best solution.

I am Back...

I left aside my mod work during the last 3 months. Now I am back:)

During those period, I was not on vacation, I just started do something else, namely, writing articles in Cantonese  (the Hong Kong language) at Blogger; making Chinese lanterns for the Chinese Lantern Festival and establishing the "DIY Lanterns" Channel at Youtube.

Here is some of my work:

Full Body DIY Protective Skins for Apple Watch

Just finished making a full body protective skin for the Apple Watch. The image below is the blueprint in scale.

iBook Clamshell Mod - DIY Protective Skin for the Shell

iBook Clamshell, like iPad, iPod or iPhone, is a personal device and designed for being carried around. So It should be warped with protective skin against scratches. However, it is an old product and tailor-made protective film is not available.

The Best Skin Ever DIY Skin Arrived

 

 

I have ordered DIY skin from Bestskinsever.com and customized it to fit the upper case of iBook.

First, apply "Tamiya Masking Tape" onto the shell of iBook. The advantage of this tape is that there will be no residual after removal.

Second, remove the Masking Tape gradually in order to keep the shap of the Masking Tape. Then cut it apart (as suggested by the above photo) until it is flattened and can adhere completely to the protective film.

We cut the protective skin along the shape of the Masking Tape. Now a DIY protective firm for the iBook is made.

Opening the Apple Yo-Yo Adapter

Today I opened the Apple Yo-Yo Adapter. I found that the one and only one way to open it is to use force. It is because the "shells" are glued with the adapter tightly without any screw. However, if anyone of you know other methods, please let me know.

Crack Open the iBook Clamshell Battery

This is a guidance to the way of crack-opening the shell of iBook G3 Clamshell. If you could replace it yourself. There will be no need to buy another one from ebay. 

Crack-opening the shell of iBook Clamshell won't be difficult. First, we need a knift, to wedge between the gap of the shell of the battery.

And then insert a screwdriver into it when the gap becomes wider.

Finally, wiggle along the gap and pry the shell off.
