(Wanted) The Stand for 17" Apple Studio (CRT) Display

I have a 17" Apple Studio (CRT) Display in my collection.

Recently, I noted that a crack appeared at the stand of this monotor.

I tried to find it at ebay but was in vain. Maybe it is already a very old product  so finding parts is difficult.

iMac G3 Mod - What is iMac G3?

I am going to make a complete record about "iMac G3 i7 Modification Project" in a series of articles.

First, let us start from a brief history of iMac G3: iMac G3 is an all-in-one, consumer-targeted desktop computer Apple debut under Steve Jobs return to Apple to be its interim CEO in 1997. It was designed by Sir Jonathan Ive.

iMac G3 was introduced at the “Back on track” Special Event in 6 May 1998. And was began shipping on 15 Aug 1998.

According to Steve Jobs, “iMac comes from the marriage of the excitement of the Internet with the simplicity of Macintosh,” “i” stands for “internet”, “individual”, “instruct”, “inform” and “inspire”.

The original iMac was of “tear-shaped”, made of translucent “Bondi Blue”-colored plastic, with a white plastic handle on top, a CRT in front, and socket panel at the right hand side hidden behind a door. It contained a PowerPC G3 233 MHz Processor, equipped with Mac OS 8.1, a tray loading CD Rom, 2 USB ports, a Modem port and an Ethernet port.

Since the original iMac is equipped with a PowerPC G3 processor, it was named as "iMac G3" to distinguish for its subsequent models. 

The specification of iMac G3 is radical, as it abandoned the 3 1/2 inch floppy disk drive, the ADB, SCSI and GeoPort Serial Connection which was still prevalent at that time.The keyboard and mouse were also redesigned for this iMac with translucent plastic and a Bondi Blue trim, with USB as the only mean for connection.

The first iteration (Model 4984) of iMac G3 is cited as “tray-loading”. In 5 Oct 1999 tray-loading iMac G3 was discontinued and was replaced by the “slot-loading” with 2 additional FireWire ports (Model M5521).

The slot-loading iMac G3 was subsequently discontinued in Mar 2003 by the released of eMac.

iBook Clamshell Mod - SD Card Slot as A Substitute of DVD Rom

We are planning to replace the original DVD rom by a SD Card Slot, as DVD is no longer a popular storage means nowadays. The Slot is located at the cover of the DVD tray.

iBook Clamshell Mod - What is iBook Clamshell?

This is one of the passages about the iBook G3 Clamshell modification project, of which a logicboard of Intel i5 was being installed into the classic Apple iBook G3 Laptop.

 

iBook G3 is a series of consumer portable laptop launched by Apple. It was first introduced by Steve Jobs during the keynote presentation of Macworld Conference & Expo in New York City on 21 June 1999.

The first generation iBook has a clam shell outlook, so it was called "iBook Clamshell" to distinguish from its succeeding models. Its body is translucent either in Tangerine (Orange) and Blueberry (Blue) colour. It has a PowerPC G3 CPU, USB, Ethernet, modem ports, an optical drive and designed with integrated wireless networking.

On February 16, 2000, Apple issued the iBook SE (Special Edition) which is in Graphite (grey) colour. 

On 13 Sept 2000, Apple issued the iBook (FireWire) which is in Indigo (Blue), Graphite and Key Lime (Green) colour.

On 1 May 2001, iBook Clamshell was discontinued and replaced by the next generation iBook G3 Dual USB in Snow colour.

iMac G3 i7 Mod Video - 10000 Views Attained

The "iMac G3 Mod i7 Mod" Video was uploaded in last April. Today I am happy to announce that 10000 views was reached, in less than a year. It is a milestone of our work done. I would like to express my gratitude towards all people who have watched this video, in particular, who liked this video, who gave comment to this video, and the subscribers of our channel.

If you have watched other related videos of mine, you might find that I have fine-tuned this computer, which include:

(1) adjusted the viewable area of the LCD screen to about 13 inches so that it look much alike the original CRT screen;

(2) install the latest Mac OSX Yosemite for this iMac G3 i7;

(3) install the iStat Menus to show more performance information of this machine; and

(4) connecting it with other Apple devices i.e. Wireless Mouse and Keyboard and iPhone 6 and iSight Stand Alone Camera.

If I have another chance to make a Version 2.0 video, It would includes all those changes, besides, I would also:

(1) upgrade the start-up disk from SATA To SSD;

(2) show its connectivity with iPod, iPad and Apple Watch;

(3) activate more applications to demonstrate its performance of multi-tasking; and

(4) improve the fluency and skill of my presentation (^.^).

256GB SD Card, not 256MB...

Bought an ADATA 256GB SD card recently in a bargain sale for about US$70.

Yes, it is 256GB, not 256MB. I will install it inside my iBook G3 i5 as a secondary drive, perhaps, for TimeMachine backup.

iBook Clamshell Mod - Connecting the LCD Panel with the Main Body

This is one of the passages about the iBook G3 Clamshell modification project, of which a logicboard of Intel i5 was being installed into the classic Apple iBook G3 Laptop.
Instead of using a 800x600 resolution LCD panel, we replace it by a new one with 1024x768. It is because a 800x600 LCD couldn't show all contents of Mac OSX Yosemite.

After we install the new LCD, we rearrange the wires as shown in the above picture. Then we attached the LCD with the main body of the iBook.

Now, the LCD was connected to the body of iBook. And it was booting Mac OSX Yosemite.
