Fixing Discolouration of iBook Clamshell

Last Article:

Discolouration is a very common phenomena for iBook G3 Clamshell. Yet it is quite unusual that there are almost no article mentions about this in google, not to mention any remedy solution.

In my last article, I shown an Indigo Clamshell with plenty of white marks scatter over the rubber parts. It is frustrating to see a vintage Mac which is still fully functional but has such a poor cosmetic condition. So I decided to find a way to fix it.

I thought that painting, perhaps, the best solution. After several attempts, I found that the permanent ink by "Shiny" done the job satisfactorily.

Studio Display Mod - Protective Film for the Display

Despite the revolution of LCD technology bring about production of HD monitors with 4K or even 5K resolutions, some people still concern not only the screen quality per se but also the overall design of a monitor (like me XD). This is one of the articles about modifying an obseleted Apple Studio Display 17" (ADC) to meet present use.
The Studio Display is heavy. It is about 45.8 lb (21 kg). The whole weight of the display is being sustaied by the stand. To make it worst, as the monitor is already a very old item, there will be some depreciation, degrading or weakening of the structure, including the stand. Therefore, whether it is still fit to hold the CRT is in doubt. In fact, my original Studio Display has been broken at the stand.

After the modification, the display will be much lighter, as the CRT will be removed. However, it is still a good idea to strengthen the structure of the stand to prevent it from damage and extend its lifespan.

Making a Protective Skin for the Stand

We have initiated a number of proposals, but finally, we found that applying Bestskinsever protective skin on the stand of the Studio Display appears to be the best solution.

iBook Clamshell Mod - Applying Protective Skin on the Shell

This is one of the passages about the iBook G3 Clamshell modification project, of which a logicboard of Intel i5 was being installed into the classic Apple iBook G3 Laptop.
In my last blog, I have DIY a protective film for the cover of iBook G3 Clamshell. Now it is the turn for applying it onto the cover of iBook G3 Clamshell.

There are some "tips" about applying the protective skins onto an object:

(1) Allow more water to stay between the protective film and the object, because water enables easy repositioning of the skin. Also, ejecting the water out of the gap is easier than that of air bubbles.

(2) After you positioned the skins, place a dry towel beneath the object and use a squeegee (e.g.) credit card to sweep the skin surface to eject the water out of the space between the object and the protective film. The excess water will be absorbed by the towel right away.

(3) Then, sock the residual water on the object thoroughly.

(4) Finally, I suggest you to place the object into the dry dehumidity cabinet box overnight, this will speed up drying process and reduce the harm of humidity to the electrical component of the object concerned.

iBook Clamshell Mod - DIY Protective Skin for the Shell

iBook Clamshell, like iPad, iPod or iPhone, is a personal device and designed for being carried around. So It should be warped with protective skin against scratches. However, it is an old product and tailor-made protective film is not available.

The Best Skin Ever DIY Skin Arrived

I have ordered DIY skin from Bestskinsever.com and customized it to fit the upper case of iBook.

First, apply "Tamiya Masking Tape" onto the shell of iBook. The advantage of this tape is that there will be no residual after removal.

Second, remove the Masking Tape gradually in order to keep the shap of the Masking Tape. Then cut it apart (as suggested by the above photo) until it is flattened and can adhere completely to the protective film.

We cut the protective skin along the shape of the Masking Tape. Now a DIY protective firm for the iBook is made.

iBook Clamshell Mod - Keyboard

This is one of the passages about the iBook G3 Clamshell modification project, of which a logicboard of Intel i5 was being installed into the classic Apple iBook G3 Laptop.

Applying Protective Film to the keys of Clamshell

Repeat pounding of keyboards renders the marking of the keys to fade.

There are two ways to prevent fading of keyboard markings: either place a layer of silicon protective film onto the keyboard, or apply protective skin on each of the keys.

The silicon protective film provides the strongest protection for iBook G3. It not only protects the keys but also the gaps betweens the key against water, dirt  or dust....

There were once many manufacturers that produced this kind of silicon film. However, as iBook Clamshell had been classified as "obsolete", accessories for it are not easily found these days. However, you could be able to find it in ebay in very rare occasions.

So making a protective film for the keyboard seems to been a more feasible choice.

If you wish to DIY a protective film for your keyboard, I would suggest the brand "Bestskinsever" as your first priority.

Why?

Because "Bestskinsever" has "DIY skin" for sale, of which one can simply use scissors to cut the desire shape any device.

Today, I applied "Bestskinsever" protective skins onto each of the key of my Apple iBook Clamshell. It looks great~

Applying Bestskinsever Protective Skin onto Keyboard

It seems crazy to paste protective skins onto keyboard because it is a less valuable item. However, I have indeed applied the Bestskinsever DIY film onto the keys of Apple Pro Keyboard, because I think that the new Apple keyboards don't match the iMac G3 Intel i7 which I am using.

Invisible Shield? Bestskinsever?

In old days we rarely have mobile devices, so there is less need to use protective skins. However, in modern-days, a MP3, a mobile phone, or a tablet is almost a must-have item to us. And as some of these devices are expensive, we may need protective skins to protect them from scratches. There are 2 market-leaders of these protective skins: the Invisible Shield and the Bestskinsever.

The Invisible Shield is available in www.zagg.com. It does ship internationally. Its product always comes with a large package: including instructions, installation tools and installation solution.

The bestskinsever also ships internationally. It is available for order at www.bestskinsever.com. It packaging is relatively simple: just the skins you ordered,  a receipt and an envelope.

The Invisible Shield offers life-time warranty to the skins you ordered. When you wish to get a replacement, just go to their site and fill a form, they will send a new skin to you. But you will be reminded to send back your damaged or old skin to her, or you will be charged the price for the new skin.

Bestskinsever doesn't offer any replacement. But, their price is relatively cheaper. For the iPod 7th Gen total body skin, the price of Invisible Shield is $24.99 whereas that of bestskinsever is $10.99. Therefore, its just a matter of choice.

When comparing with the skins per se, Invisible shield is a bit thicker than the skins of Bestskinsever.

However,  there is one competitive edge of Bestskinsever over Invisible Shield: Bestskinsever do have DIY skins for sale. I personally adore this kind of DIY skins because I can cut it to fit any device I like. I even have had make customized skins for my beloved Apple Pro Keyboard.
